Lawyer Wages

If you are one of the unlucky ones who have ever had the need to hire an attorney, the first thing that comes to your mind is how much are lawyer wages. Everyone knows that professionals like them charge exhorbitantly but it seems that it is for good reason.  Why you may ask? Well, in the first place attorneys charge on an hourly rate. There is no hiding any additional fees unlike other professionals which say that their price is low but will put on several miscellaneous charges on top of their services.  Attorneys have to charge by the hour (hourly wage) because their primary resource is their time.  As long as you keep your meetings short and direct, you will not incur additional costs for their service.

Another reason for their high rates is that part of it have to go to maintain an office space that is built to impress.  Lawyers and law firms have to have an office that screams to their clients that they are top-notch. Imagine going to a lawyer’s office that is messy and chaotic and chances are that you won’t get them. Attorneys also have to go out of their way to attract clients by getting advertisements in all shapes and sizes: streamers, banners, calling cards, documents with their personal letterheads all add up to quite a bill.  The cost of having someone design these advertisements also come into play.

Be reminded as well that it is not only the attorneys that you are paying, but also their administrative costs.  Lawyer wages take into account different elements.  This could mean the other people that they are working with such as their couriers, paralegals, secretaries and other personnel in the office. Administrative costs also include the equipment that they use while they engage in their service.  These equipment consists of scanners, fax machines, computers, photocopiers, etc. An attorney could not do away with any one of these personnel or equipment and each one helps in making their lives easier so they can concentrate on their main tasks.

It is good to note though that even though they are paid for about four to six hours of work, attorneys go above and beyond this as they could spend as much as ten to twelve hours working since they have to do a lot of research and study on your case.  These hours are not directly billable to you as a client so this means that you are getting some sort of savings from them.

Lastly, attorneys also have to get multiple types of insurance since practicing law is a very high liability profession.  They have to get coverage on omissions and error insurance for example. This is to make sure that they are there to finish your case.

Add all these up and you could get an idea on why they have to charge so high. An attorney’s life is not easy and once you have to get one it is always worth the price.  An excellent attorney is always an important tool in a person’s arsenal.  Now you know why lawyer wages or annual salaries are high.  They are worth it.
